This song surprised me on Pandora. I love how dark it is.
Heard Aoife O'Donovan sing a version of this REALLY old song on Prairie Home Companion yesterday. I liked her version better, but couldn't find it on youtube. This version is plenty haunting, but there are too many non-rhyming lines for me.

I believe the song by the sacred harp singers is a style of singing called shape note. It was made popular in the Appalachian area for folks who couldn't read music. I have heard some previously and it really does have a distinctive sound that I like.

The shape note singing is what I grew up with in West Virginia. My grandfather, Pop pop Rockwell was a song leader at Church and that was the style of singing. Somewhere I have an old tape of him leading singing at a family reunion. I guess I will try a little harder to find it. Thank you for sharing, it brings back many fond memories. Mom
